The privately-owned company was founded in 2006 by Tom First, one of the two "Juice Guys" that co-founded Nantucket Nectars and grew it from a small, grass-roots company to national prominence. A fitness fanatic, Tom had been searching for a great-tasting sport drink that wasn't loaded with sugar and artificial sweeteners. With no such drink available, he decided to create his own, and owater was born.
